WHY
Why study Industrial Design at the Tshwane University of Technology?
We have a range of advanced equipment ranging from 3D printers (Dimension uPrints and Fortus 250). Laser cutters (Epilog), CNC routers and individual work stations for each student which includes a computer running the relevant software.
STUDENTS COMPETE INTERNATIONALLY
Our students compete internationally. In 2016 three students exhibited their work at the Global Grad Show at the Dubai Design Week.
GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY
The Industrial Design Program at TUT is one of the lowest cost programs of its kind. Costs for equipment and materials are built into our fees.
We are the only institution based in Pretoria, that offers a qualification in Industrial Design.
INDUSTRY LINKED
As a program we aim to produce industry relevant graduates. We are hosted within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment and therefore interface with various engineering disciplines (Mechanical. Electrical, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering etc).
RELEVANT SOFTWARE
Students are taught on both industry leading software (Solidworks, Fusion 360, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop) as well as leading opensource software offerings (Blender 3D, Gimp, Inkscape)
National Diploma Industrial Design
- Do you have creative or artistic ability?

Advanced Diploma in Industrial Design
Students are able to advance their own skills, knowledge and competencies obtained in NQF 6 industrial design training by independently solving industrial design problems within the local formal or informal sectors in order to design and develop new products for local and or international markets. Study at this level is conducted from a cooperative working relationship within a development group, the members of which may come from marketing, engineering, manufacturing, research & development, software development, or other professions. The ability to function and independently manage the design process as part of a multidisciplinary team is therefore essential. The qualifying undergraduate student should therefore be capable of integrating, interpreting and applying knowledge from a range of disciplines to respond to changing technologies, materials and social environments to design specific products solutions selected from diverse fields of business. The qualification also provides an essential background for industrial design specialisation studies that support design and research activities within the tertiary training community.
Post Graduate Diploma in Design and Innovation Leadership (under development)
The Post Graduate Diploma in Innovation Leadership aims to provide NQF 7 graduates from all learning disciplines with the skills and knowledge required to lead and execute innovation projects from within a commercial setting underpinned by their prior NQF 7 field of study. Graduates of this qualification will be capable of leading new innovation projects within existing companies were the need to innovate successfully remains an ever present challenge. Using a range of transdisciplinary skills and knowledge these dynamic forward thinking graduates will be equipped to synthesise critical thinking with both first order understanding (technology-centred design) and second order understanding (human-centred design) to solve problems that have immediate commercial and or social potential. The transdisciplinary skills and knowledge taught in this qualification are applicable to all fields of study and can be applied by graduates in their specific field. This qualification is intended to attract individuals who seek to become leading innovators in their field of work and thus focusses on the vocational application of innovation leadership skills.
